Putting an O-435-C in a Acroduster II. Getting ready to install the fuel pump, and low and behold, the AN pads have plugs – there are no gears in there to drive a fuel pump! Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get engine driven fuel pressure? I can go electric and wobble, but am I limited to float carbs. Can you use a PSC carb with a wobble pump? I doubt anyone will give me good news on this one. This does not weaken the structure and saves lots of time. Riveted fabric is just as strong as rib stitched. The holes should be pre-drilled before fabric covering, but it is OK to install after fabric is installed. Take care in removing the metal chips. Use a 3/8" wide tape between the rivets and fabric. Use a pencil type soldering iron with tip ground to a point to punch holes in tape and fabric. Install large head, alum. pop rivets and tape. job done. Les Homan (takeoff@starduster.com) Oroville, CA USA - Wednesday, August 25, 1999 at 09:35:38 (PDT) RE: Bob Perkins's 8/19/99 post Check the area first thing in the morning and them set it out in sun on a hot day. You should find the problem to be minimal when cool and worst when in sun on hot day. This is called oil canning. Aluminum leading edges are great but need to be put on in about 12" long pieces butted together on top of ribs. I would suspect yours are two piece with a joint at mid distance. Rigging changes will not help or hurt this. Nothing short of redoing leading edge and fabric that I am aware of will help. Other things to look out for that could cause this problem and be serious are broken nose ribs and or broken spar. These need to be checked through inspection openings or by drilling a hole in the alum. leading edge with a hole saw and looking inside. For broken nose ribs leading edge can be filled with pour foam. I am going to use fabric pop rivets on the vertical stab.. just like I saw Jim and Bill use on the first batch out of the shop back in the 70's.. according to the FAR's the rib lacing spacing should be 1 inch.. using pop rivets it seems pretty close.. any comments? Gary Debaun (B747Inst@aol.com) Lakeville, MN USA - Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 17:45:46 (PDT) Joe & Brad, thanks so much.. I remember now why I had one on my Super Miniplane.. I had no electrical system. Yeh, it's all comming back now!! I'll use an electric pump on the Acroduster, will be so much easier than having to mount the wobble pump.. Hey, this wobble pump cost over $800.00 in the Aircraft Spruce catalog...it just came along with the engine I bought.. Gary DeBaun (B747Inst@aol.com) Lakeville, CA USA - Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 17:39:14 (PDT) Regarding the wobble pump: The reference is part 23, par 9xx and pertains to dual fuel delivery methods. In summary, you do not have gravity (C-172) as your tank is too low, you must have two independent fuel delivery methods (not regulation, just smart thing to do). One method is engine driven pump (main pump) the other can be electrical or hand (wobble). If you have an electrical pump, use it, its preferred over the wobble. Brad Bertele (Brad.Bertele@Chamberlaingroup.com) Long Island, NY USA - Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 16:32:30 (PDT) The Wabble pump or Weldon pump is in searies between the fuel tank out let and the engine driven pump. It is used to bring up fuel pressure to prime and start the engine untill the engine driven pump can come on line. And of course for a back up if the engine driven pump should fail. Hope this helps Joe Joe Fisher joe @ckt.net Galesburg, KS USA - Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 11:05:20 (PDT) You need a wable pump if you don't have an electracal systom. It's been 20 years since I worked on an aerobatic machine.. I got a Christen 844 Wobble pump here... When I tore down the Acroduster II that I aquired at Oshkosh, there was no wobble pump..(no engine for that matter).. I couldn't even find a bracket or a place for the wobble pump. I am using a modified IO360 for power..do I need this wobble pump? I can't remember..if so, to where does it hook up? what is it's function?.. I feel so stupid...to much MEK over the years has killed off the brain cells.. Plane looks great and its hard to believe it was built in 61'. At this point I don't know when or if it has been recovered. Need help with history and advice on next steps. John Hammond (jhammond@gloryroad.net) Oxford, NC USA - Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 07:14:18 (PDT) Hi Don, Think of the alerons elevators and rudders as little airplanes. If you have a tail heavy airplane it is unstable. On slow airplanes with ridgid structure the control systom is strong enouph to force the flight controls into stability. As the speed increases it becomes nessary to staticaly ballance the flight controles. In other words add weight to the leading edge to acheave a safe balance. If you put the interconection behind the hing line you also need to add extra weight to the leading edge to acheave the proper ballance if you put the interconections ahead of the hing line then the weight of the interconections become part of that leading edge weight. and help acheve proper balance. The rear mounted rods are easyer to construct and have more travel that makes them easyer to ajust. The front mounted rods have verey short travel that makes them more critical to ajust. Usualy the lighter you can make airplane parts the better. Lighter flys better. I hope this helps. I flight plan for 26 useable which seems to be about right. The pick-up is at the bottom of the tank but through a flop tube so 2 unuseable is reasonable. Matt Clark Sunderland, England - Tuesday, July 06, 1999 at 12:26:21 (PDT) Open letter to Clark Hi Clark I'm Joe Fisher I'm a Flight Instructor and A&P mechanic. I built my first airplane starting when I was 19 about 35 years ago. Now I recover and restor small fabric covered airplanes and I love it. My oberservation is this approch dosen't work verey often. Most of the projects I work on come from people that have given up becouse building an airplane is not as simple as it looks. If you don't have a pilots lisence you need to get one and get experiance flying to find out what type of airplane you realy want. An 8Omph singel seat airplane can be built fairly cheep using an auto engine but is almost usless for flying out of sight of the airport. And bigger airplanes coust more. My adivce is to get a pilots lisence and if you just want an airplane of your own by one that flys if you can't afford to by on your own then join or start a club where you shair the fixed couts of owner ship. Then some day build the airplane of your dreams for instance I will some day build a small singel seat byplane I know it will have no pratical use I don't need to build flying time, to by one would not satisfy my desire. I have to remember welding, sanding, rib stiching and so on for it to truley be mine. The simplest and cheepest to build airplane that I have seen is the Evans Volksplane VP-1 and VP-2 . All wood frame work extreamley simple construction and you can fold it up and take it home. They fly good but the volkswagon engine is verey unrelyable. I wish you luck Joe. If it was origanaly doped with enouph silver then over coated with a color dope the fabric and finish will last about 20 or more years. If it is over coated with enamel, acrylic enamel , acrylic lacquer or any urethane finish there is nothing you can do to prolong the short life of these finishes. They will crack , peal and ringworm. The only way to repair these finishes is to recover the whole airplane. The dope finish can be rejunivated if nessary. Dope is like a good car finish if you let it deterate it will. If you keep it waxed with real wax not silecone, keep it in the shade and it dose not get hailed on you have done all you can do and it will last 20 years or more. That is a cool airplane should be a lot of fun. The amount of blowby around the rings, the fire goes by the rings and heats the oil. A low time engine sounds like probibly the chrome cylender and new rings didn't seat some times this can happen and the static compression will still read good. The solution is to rehone the cylenders and put in new rings. Of corse the other couse for high oil temp is lack of cooling it is possibel that the oil cooler is to small, not getting air or the air is going through to fast. Sounds crasey but some times restricting the out flow of air can pressurize the cooling air the same way the cooling baffels force the air around the cylinders. Thinking of baffels they are also critical to oil temp. The dieameter of the propeller is determined by the tork. The longer thr blades the more tork they convert to thrust a 71" prop is to small to convert much of the potential tork of an O-360 to thrust. As the weather warms I am getting nearer redline on oil temp. An 85 degree day will result in 240 degree oil at 2400 rpm and 115 mph cruise. Serious aerobatics pushes it to 270-280(redline). Cylinder head temps don't waiver at about 280 regardless of OAT. Oil pressure is 80-90psi cold and 65-75 with the oil at 270. Comments or suggestions? The scott 32OO is suposed to have 4O psi but I lower the pressure to stop shimmy. It might be that the caster has changed. As the tail wheel spring has lost some of it's arch the wheel sweeps back. The line of rotation should be nearly vertical. Putting diffrent sized stearing springs could break up the resonance of the shimmy. Joe Fisher joe@ckt.net Galesburg, KS USA - Tuesday, June 01, 1999 at 18:38:29 (PDT) Subject: Tailwheel shimmy, and how to stop same! The aircraft is a SA-300 and the tailwheel is a brand new Scott 3200. After a couple of dozen landings, the tailwheel has started to shimmy, so much so that the last time the shimmy was so violent that it bent the control horns on the tailwheel. After collecting the large parts I inspected the installation and found that the tire pressure was 12 pounds, and the mechanism seems very solid with little or not slop. I will admit that the landing that started the shimmy was tailwheel first and a bit hard. I am using the old Maul steering cables and springs as they seemed a bit more failsafe than the Scott springs. Any ideas or suggestions?? My A&P seems to vote in favor with the hard landing bent the ears up and then it shimmed do to lack of control connections. I happen to like the low tire pressure because it lets me off the bad landing hook!! Tire pressure is still my responsibility but... Help! Thanks to all. The other has semetrical wings and four alerons and an IO-36O. In both airplanes the turbulance in the cockpit was just about intolerable. I just thought that is opencockpit flying. Then about 15 years ago I got a ride in one of the Red Beron Stermans and I noticed that the air was calmer than in the Pits. About 5 years ago a custemer bruoght me a Flybaby he had reasently bought and I rerigged the wings to make it fly better and I noticed how calm the air is in the cockpit. In Sport Aviation there was an artical about a fellow that built a Prat 45O hp powered singel place as a real life Smiling Jack and when he first flew it with a bubble windshild and the air turblance in the cockpit was litterly intolable. Then he built a windsheild out fo flat plates simler to simler to a Sterman and that solved the problem. I suspect that the air flow is smoth around the bubble and when it comes off the edge it turns turbulant and when it lirrerly hits the flat plates it is turblant and smoths out when it passes the back edge. Just food for thought. Joe joe fisher joe@ckt.net galesburg, ks USA - Saturday, May 08, 1999 at 04:47:26 (PDT) Anyone seen Starduster II N704ST?
